Citrulline malate strength training marketing often promises a bigger pump, more reps, and heavier top sets from one scoop of pre-workout. The evidence is more careful. Acute citrulline (often as citrulline malate) shows a small pooled benefit for high-intensity strength and power tasks (Trexler et al., 2019), and a dedicated repetitions-to-failure meta-analysis finds about three extra reps (~6%) across sets at roughly 70% 1RM after 6–8 g taken 40–60 minutes pre-lift (Vårvik et al., 2021). A separate strength-focused meta in resistance-trained adults does not support a clear maximal-strength improvement (Aguiar & Casonatto, 2022).
So if you chase citrulline malate strength training for a new one-rep max, you are usually aiming at the wrong outcome. If you chase denser hypertrophy work — more quality reps in a fixed session, short-rest accessories, or volume you otherwise dump early — the endurance signal is more plausible. This article separates nitric-oxide folklore from what the trials actually pool, covers practical dosing from the literature, and sits beside beta-alanine, creatine, and progressive overload.
What citrulline malate is supposed to do
L-citrulline is a non-essential amino acid that raises plasma arginine and nitric-oxide pathway markers more efficiently than equal oral arginine in many contexts. Commercial products usually sell citrulline malate (citrulline bound to malate), marketed for ammonia clearance, aerobic enzyme support, and “blood flow.” Critical reviews note that mechanisms are biologically plausible but still incompletely proven as the reason for any gym-floor effect, and that product ratios (for example 1:1 vs 2:1 citrulline:malate) and absolute citrulline dose are often poorly reported (Gonzalez & Trexler, 2020; Gough et al., 2021).
Practical translation for citrulline malate strength training: treat it as a possible small aid for completing hard set work, not as a substitute for recoverable weekly hard sets, daily protein, or honest rest periods. Keep food, sleep, and progressive loading first.
Extra reps vs maximal strength: what metas show
Trexler and colleagues pooled twelve studies of acute citrulline (≥3 g, ≥30 minutes pre-exercise, without stacked stimulants) on high-intensity strength and power outcomes. The overall effect was small but significant (Hedges’ g ≈ 0.20), with clearer signals in strength-oriented and resistance-exercise subgroups than in mixed power outcomes (Trexler et al., 2019).
Vårvik, Bjørnsen, and Gonzalez narrowed the question to repetitions performed before voluntary failure during strength training. Across eight double-blind trials (~137 participants; mostly trained men), 6–8 g of citrulline malate 40–60 minutes before lifting added about 3 ± 5 repetitions (~6.4%) versus placebo, with a small standardized mean difference (~0.20). Lower-body protocols showed a stronger trend than upper-body ones (Vårvik et al., 2021). Sensitivity checks noted that removing the classic Pérez-Guisado & Jakeman (2010) chest/arm protocol softened the pooled estimate — a reminder that early positive trials still influence the story.
By contrast, Aguiar and Casonatto meta-analyzed strength outcomes in resistance-trained adults and found no significant overall effect of citrulline malate on muscle strength (SMD ≈ 0.13, CI crossing zero), including upper- and lower-limb splits (Aguiar & Casonatto, 2022). Teaching point: citrulline malate strength training is mostly about squeezing a few more quality reps into dense work — not rewriting your peaking cycle for a single heavy triple. Pair that honesty with RPE / RIR so a better pump does not get mistaken for a true strength breakthrough.

Classic trial, mixed follow-ups, and honest caveats
Pérez-Guisado and Jakeman popularized the topic with an 8 g citrulline malate crossover before a high-volume bench protocol: more total reps in later sets and lower next-day soreness ratings versus placebo (Pérez-Guisado & Jakeman, 2010). Later trials are mixed — some replicate muscular-endurance edges, others do not — which is exactly why meta-analyses now matter more than any single Instagram citation (Gonzalez & Trexler, 2020; Vårvik et al., 2021).
Gough and colleagues’ critical review pushes further: study quality, washout, blinding of the sour taste of citrulline malate, and unclear citrulline:malate ratios can inflate or hide effects. They argue the ergogenic case is still provisional and that practitioners should not treat citrulline malate as a guaranteed performance drug (Gough et al., 2021). That tone matches how you should use it in a log: optional experiment, not a foundation.
A practical citrulline malate template for lifters
Use this only after creatine, protein, and progressive loading are already boringly solid. If you still want a citrulline malate strength training trial:
- Dose: 6–8 g citrulline malate in the window used by the repetitions-to-failure meta (Vårvik et al., 2021). Prefer products that state the actual L-citrulline amount or a clear ratio; if the label is opaque, you cannot interpret your own experiment.
- Timing: about 40–60 minutes before the hardest session of the day — usually a high-set lower day or a dense accessory day, not a pure singles peaking day.
- Session match: prioritize multi-set work near ~70% 1RM with several working sets per exercise. That is closer to the pooled protocols than a three-attempt 1RM test.
- Stacking: do not credit citrulline for what caffeine already does. If you test it, keep caffeine dose and timing constant for a few weeks so you can see whether total reps actually move.
- Logging: tag the start week beside working sets in Lyfta (or any log) and compare matched accessories for 2–3 weeks. Look for total reps or last-set RIR, not vibes.

Example dense lower day (optional citrulline trial)
- Back squat or leg press — 4 sets of 6–10 at a solid RPE 7–8, full rests.

- Quad or hamstring accessory with shorter rests — 3 sets near failure, where an extra rep or two would actually matter.
- Optional calf or core finisher. Keep total hard sets inside your usual weekly volume budget.
If citrulline helps at all, it should show up as slightly better completion on the denser accessories — not as a sudden jump in squat 1RM. That framing also keeps the experiment compatible with drop sets or rest-pause blocks if those are already in your plan.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a maximal-strength miracle when the strength-specific meta is null (Aguiar & Casonatto, 2022).
- Taking a micro-dose buried in a proprietary blend and calling the trial “failed citrulline.”
- Changing sleep, caffeine, and program the same week you add the scoop — then blaming or praising the powder.
- Ignoring GI comfort. Some people tolerate 8 g fine; others do better splitting or simply skipping it.
- Treating early positive single trials as settled science while ignoring the critical reviews (Gough et al., 2021).
When to skip citrulline malate
Skip or deprioritize it if your mesocycle is peaking low-rep strength, your budget is better spent on creatine and food, you dislike GI side effects, or you expected a hypertrophy switch rather than a small endurance nudge.
